UPDATE : I’m going to walk away from this anyhow. Still interested in any mileage checking tricks you may have up your sleeve, but I’m going to skip this truck. The moment I hit publish I realized if I had to ask for OPPO’s opinion it was because something didn’t feel right and I should walk away.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Hey guys, the Yukon I went to see the other day was a complete bust. And by that I mean the frame was busted and rusted lol. I walked away from it.
Now I’ve got a lead on an 04 Suburban that’s marked as 90,000 miles...but the carfax has it up at 176,000 as of 2 years ago. Dealership is saying that’s gotta be an error and they are inspecting it now.
If the mileage is real they’re only asking 7,300 and it’s 2nd row captains chairs, leather all the way through, moonroof, rear entertainment/dvd system, upgraded touch screen stereo.
Do you guys know of any other ways to try and check this thing’s mileage? Do I just run like hell because it’s suspicious? Just try and get some more cash off the top of it?
BTW it’s a full fledged Ford dealer that is part of a
massive
dealer group in Michigan so it’s not a random little B lot.
(grille guard is insane and excessive and would be removed)

The dash goes out frequently on these. Somebody replaced the cluster and didn’t reprogram the odometer. Very common.

This was my first thought.
Dash probably went out somewhere between 176,000-200k and then they replaced the cluster.

New cluster for sure. A quick google shows that the miles are only stored on the cluster. A good mechanic should have put a sticker on the driver’s door to show miles when changed and miles on the cluster.

I am not sure, but you must keep the brush guard to fend off mustangs.

I bet this guy got a great trade in deal on it and the dealership is going to get owned on it.
If they’re pushing this thing as legit mileage though - I’m glad they’re getting hit with a loss.

HAHAHA - it would squish them. That would be an awkward balance between the Mercury Capri Fox Body in the garage and the ‘Burbon though.

I’d bet on the carfax being right over the dealer (especially if there is a mileage history on the report).
I don’t think there’s a good way to be sure (some cars may be able to report ODBII, but pretty sure that’s non-standard). Best thing would be if you are really interested to have a 3rd party do a detailed inspection and tell you what it looks like based on wear. Probably though you should operate on the assumption that 176k is more true unless you have evidence to the contrary.

The “Burb would keep the fox body in line!

I’m going to walk away from it. too sketch.

Well, something big is coming. this one is gonna be a NO giving the discrepancy .
![]() 08/06/2019 at 12:44 |

It’s possible someone replaced the cluster and didn’t either reprogram it to match or otherwise didn’t do the paperwork to document the change and/or get the title branded as “excess of mechanical limits” or whatever that state’s equivalent is . That said, a C arfax or Autocheck report should tell you what the mileage should be, or be obvious if there is an erroneous mileage entry somewhere in the records collected by the report. Between service visits that report mileage, title/registration events and inspections, accident reports, ect.. there should be a clear and logical progression to the mileage.

Had a Miata I looked at like this. Called one or two of the shops listed on the Carfax, had them pull up their records. Their records matched carfax, so odo must have been fucked with at some point
![]() 08/06/2019 at 12:46 |

Yeah this was a really natural progression all the way up to 176k miles.
Pretty much as soon as I clicked publish on this post I was like “If you’re questioning it that much that you had to ask OPPO’s opinion - walk away” so I’m going to pass on this one.
![]() 08/06/2019 at 12:47 |

That’s a clever idea. I realized after posting this though that if I was so concerned I had to call for backup opinions I should walk away from it.

Sometimes checking with a dealer service department can be useful, also. Generally, by VIN they can lookup service history done within the manufacture’s dealer network. I’ve occasionally had this turn up a goldmine information on cars I’ve bought or considered buying, especially things that were originally more expensive luxury or sporting machines that were much more likely to have been service at dealers more often than quick lube type places and indy shops.

Yeah, the mileage is easy to follow on the Carfax report and they are misrepresenting it for sure. If you were able to get it for whatever a 260k mile suburban would go for, then sure why not? But those kind of miles are getting up there.
![]() 08/06/2019 at 14:03 |

yeah that’s a good idea. This particular example was a Chevy at a Ford dealer so it wouldn’t be shared data though.
![]() 08/06/2019 at 14:04 |

Yeah the problem is I don’t want one with that many miles. I’m looking in the 100-150k mileage range. No worries, plenty out there.

It might be fine, but this is a Suburban we’re on about- they’re not rare. I’d just find another one.

I’m moving on, no worries. had another one lined up in minutes.

Its not entirely uncommon for the cluster to be swapped o n this generation truck due to failure

1. Trusting Carfax to accurately report anything is a terrible idea.
2. GMs are notorious for cluster issues, likely the cluster was replaced at some point, meaning the mileage is no longer accurate.

I’d trust my own inspection before i trusted Carfax or the Dealer to know what was going on.
![]() 10/31/2019 at 10:36 |

Yeah I walked on this one. Wasn’t comfortable with it and the dealer got pushy saying it was all legit. There were plenty of others out there. I got close to a Tahoe soon after and then found out the odometer didn’t line up on the conversion from kilometers to miles when it was imported from canada, walked on that one.
Ended up in a 1 owner Yukon with 112k on it and the interior looks like it has 12k miles on it.

Based on my experience, I’d say they are correct. It’s an error the dealer has made that conveniently works in their favour.
I would assume it has at least 200,000 on it and I would also assume that the dealer is either lying or genuinely doesn’t know shit about the vehicle’s history.

“I bet this guy got a great trade in deal on it and the dealership is going to get owned on it.”
I bet there’s a decent chance the dealer knew about the cluster replacement and they’re just playing dumb.

well, I’m willing to guess that a person got a sweet trade in deal then the dealer pulled the carfax after the deal and went -SHIT and is now lying to everyone to try and get their cash back out of it.
![]() 11/04/2019 at 11:00 |

yup, that’s why i walked away. they were saying it was an error on carfax not in the dash and denied any chance of the cluster being swapped.
